The Letter That Started Everything

My grandmother wrote
seven things down.

My name is Kevin J. Durkin. Dorothy Rose Tyler was my grandmother, my mother's mother, and she was one of the most remarkable people I have ever known.

She lived through two world wars, the Great Depression, a century of change, and more loss than most people will ever face. At a funeral, Dorothy encountered a dear family friend, Tammi. Tammi was so moved by Dorothy's presence and grace that she sent her a card afterward. Dorothy's response was not a simple thank you. She picked up a pen and wrote down the secrets of a life well lived, in her own hand, on a simple notecard. It was just weeks before her 104th birthday. It turned out to be weeks before her passing. With the kind of clarity that only comes from a life fully lived.

I watched her live every one of these principles for decades. And one afternoon, watching her move through her day with such quiet purpose and warmth, something clicked. I said it out loud. And the name I said was already the framework. GARSH. It was as if the name had always been waiting there, embedded in the way she lived.

Handwritten letter from Dorothy

Dear Tammi,

What sweet words! I would first say...

1.

Love God with your whole heart, mind and strength and pray every day.

2.

Keep a positive attitude and smile.

3.

Get plenty of sunshine, sleep and eat your fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water.

4.

Be mentally tough.

5.

Help others and volunteer.

6.

Give life to something — plant a garden, grow flowers or vegetables.

7.

Talk to people, especially your neighbors. Love everyone. Keep busy.

May God bless you and your dear family.

Love and prayers,

Mrs. Tyler

Written in her own hand, age 103

The Origin

One moment.
One word.
A lifetime of meaning.

Kevin was watching Dorothy one afternoon, the way she moved through her day with such quiet purpose, such warmth, such consistency. And he said it out loud, the way you do when something finally clicks: "Oh, Garsh."

It was not a planned moment. It was a recognition. And then he realized: the word he had just said was already the framework. Every letter was already a principle she had lived. The name had been there all along. He just had to see it.

That is how GARSH was born. Not in a boardroom. On a farm. From a life.

The Framework

Not a philosophy.
A daily practice.

GARSH is a five-principle framework drawn from a life that lasted 104 years. It is not a motivational system. It is not a self-help program. It is a set of daily practices that, when lived consistently, produce the kind of life Dorothy Rose Tyler lived: purposeful, warm, resilient, and deeply connected.

The five principles are built into the name. But the meaning of the name is not given away here. It is earned. Through the 7-Day Challenge, you experience each principle before it is explained. That is the point. That is how Dorothy lived it.

Rooted in Real Life

Every principle comes from watching a real person live it for 104 years. This is not theory. It is evidence.

Built for Daily Practice

GARSH is not a weekend retreat. It is a set of small, daily habits that compound over a lifetime.

Faith-Rooted, Not Exclusive

Dorothy's faith was the foundation of how she lived. GARSH honors that without requiring it. All are welcome here.

The Journey

One path.
Five milestones.

Every part of the GARSH ecosystem is connected. Each step builds on the one before it. Here is the full path.

The GARSH Collection

A connected series
designed to move you forward.

Every GARSH product is designed to work together, building on each other as you go deeper into the practice.

Living GARSH

Community

You do not have to build
a better life alone.

Living GARSH is the community where people practice these principles together, every day. It lives on Facebook, where the conversation is warm, active, and grounded in the same legacy that started everything.

Share what you are building. Stay consistent with people who are doing the same. Ask questions. Celebrate small wins. This is what Dorothy did, every day, with everyone around her. Now there is a place to do it together.

Where to Begin

Start with seven days.
Everything else follows.

The 7-Day GARSH Challenge is the fastest way to experience what GARSH is. Not as a concept. As a daily practice. Seven focused days. One principle per day. At the end, the deeper meaning behind the name is revealed.

Free to start. No account required. Most people who begin keep going.
